WHAT ARE BROMELIADS?

Bromeliads used to be one of the best kept secrets in the plant world. As the new millennium begins, they are taking their rightful place as some of the most popular plants for gardeners in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions.

Bromeliads are recently evolved, so on the evolutionary scale, they are very diverse and highly adapted to filling niches in the environment. This includes in gardens, where there is a Bromeliad to fill any situation!

Bromeliads in their native habitats (unique to the Americas) grow in such diverse places as 2,500 metre elevations to sea level, rain forests to deserts. Some are true "air plants" or epiphytes, deriving their nutrients from rainfall and debris falling collecting in their cupped shape, while others are terrestrial.
